Advanced Vapour Permeability Measurement for Airship and Aerospace Fabrics

Partly because lighter-than-air Airships are ecologically friendly, they are now being used across a wide range of areas – from cargo and passenger transports through to surveillance, advertising and research - and this industry is expanding at an impressive 7.7% year on year.  This growth has been enabled by the development of a new generation of ultra-performance fabrics.

Versaperm is the vanguard of the vapour permeability measurement systems that have driven this development.  The new mass spectrometer based versions of its equipment works with all of the gases used by the industry P- and beyond the entire range of relevant pressures, partial pressures and temperatures.  This is vitally important as vapour permeability issues effect comfort, economy and safety critical performance.

Airbag gasses, aviation fuel, refrigerants, hydraulic fluid, and water vapour are widely used by the industry and all of them can permeate through any material, and all can be measured with the Versaperm equipment.  The equipment can determine this not just the fabrics used but also for other vapour problems that can even cause failures in electronics, computers, seals, valves, membranes as well as in structural and mechanical systems.  

Sensitivity and accuracy depend on the vapour and materials but are typically in the PPM (Parts Per Million) range, with PPB (Parts Per Billion) for some materials.  Results are precise and highly repeatable.

The equipment can measure the permeability for flat materials, formed components, complete finished products and enclosures.  It can measure several samples at a time and offers a simple to use automated control panel with a large touch-screen interface.  The equipment needs very little re-calibration and requires, at most, minimal training. 

As well as designing, manufacturing and supplying the equipment to Aerospace and Standards agencies around the world, Versaperm offers a laboratory testing service and consultancy services.
